What is Bullying? Understanding the Definition

To ensure every concern is addressed appropriately, Flour Bluff ISD adheres to the Texas state law definition of bullying. This involves severe, persistent, or pervasive actions intended to cause harm, create fear, or disrupt the educational environment. It’s more than simple unkindness; it’s a pattern of behavior that negatively impacts a student’s education.

Common Forms of Bullying

Bullying can manifest in several ways, including verbal abuse, social exclusion, cyberbullying through digital platforms, and physical altercations. It’s crucial to recognize all these forms to effectively prevent and address them.

Verbal Bullying

Teasing, name-calling, inappropriate comments, threats.

Social/Exclusion Bullying

Spreading rumors, leaving someone out on purpose, public embarrassment.

Cyberbullying

Bullying using electronic devices, social media, texts, or emails.

Physical Bullying

Hitting, kicking, tripping, pushing, or damaging property.

Key Elements of the Texas State Definition

For an act to be considered bullying, it must meet specific criteria as outlined by state law:

Severe, Persistent, or Pervasive

The behavior isn’t a one-time event but a repeated pattern.

Intent to Harm

The action aims to cause physical or emotional harm or damage property.

Disrupts Education

It creates a hostile environment that interferes with a student’s learning.
