Junior High Math and Science Team Captures Historic 41st Consecutive State Championship
The Flour Bluff Junior High Math–Science Team captured its 41st consecutive Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) Middle School 5A State Championship on Saturday, April 6, at the State Meet held at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
Teams from across the state competed in Number Sense, Calculator Applications, Mathematics, and Science. Under Coach Anthony Gillespey’s leadership, the Hornets earned the overall Sweepstakes Championship, claimed State Titles in Team Number Sense and Team Calculator Applications, and placed third in Mathematics and fifth in Science in a highly competitive field.
Flour Bluff students also delivered outstanding individual performances:
- Angela Li — 8th Grade State Champion, Calculator Applications
- Adele Chiang — 7th Grade State Champion, Calculator Applications
- Vickie Liu — 6th Grade State Champion, Number Sense
In addition to scoring more points than any other team in the 1A-6A classifications, Flour Bluff secured 23 of a possible 60 top‑ten individual finishes in the math events, and every member of the 7th‑grade math team placed in the top 20 statewide in both Number Sense and Calculator Applications.
Coach Anthony Gillespey, who has led the Flour Bluff Math and Science Team since 2010, has now guided the program to a state championship every year of his tenure. His commitment to preparation, consistency, and academic excellence has ensured that the tradition built decades ago continues to thrive at the highest level.
The program was originally founded in the mid‑1980s by former Flour Bluff math teacher Joe Hay, who established the school as a statewide academic powerhouse. That legacy has now spanned more than four decades under continued strong leadership.
