Flour Bluff Intermediate hosted their Veteran’s Day Program to recognize staff members and parents who have served and are currently serving in the United States military. Attendees had an opportunity to watch Choir and Kaleidoscope II students perform during the annual ceremony. Students also set a Fallen Soldier Table to pay tribute to individuals who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Family members of students also took part in the event. A flag from each branch of service as well as the United States Flag was carried and presented by a uniformed service member. Students wrote notes of ‘Thanks’ which were presented to a Veteran in attendance.

In addition to recognizing Veterans, the Department of Defense was on-hand to present the prestigious Patriot Award to Intermediate Principal, Dr. Sal Alvarado. Sixth grade math teacher, Emma Mathis, a Commander in the Naval Reserves, nominated and presented the award during the Veterans Day Program.

“Over the years, I have asked to leave work early to rush to the airport so I could fly to drill,” said Commander Mathis. “Dr. Alvarado has always approved my requests without hesitation or making me feel guilty.”

The Patriot Award is presented by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to a company or employer who contributes to national security by supporting employee participation in the National Guard and Reserve Force.

Commander Mathis also pinned Dr. Alvarado and gave him a Commander O5 coin for ‘Bravo Zulu’ or ‘Job Well Done’.
