On Saturday, February 17, Flour Bluff Junior High Math/Science Team members traveled to Houston for the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) State Qualifier to compete against the top teams from across the state. The group won first place in two out of the four team events (Number Sense and Calculator), 4th in General Math and 6th in Science. In addition, students finished 3rd in Sweepstakes, but only missed first place by less than 160 points out of 6400 possible.
Three of the students placed 1st place in individual events: Sammy Regalado – 7th Number Sense and Calculator, Ethan Patras – 8th General Math and Kyle Xu – 6th Calculator. Also, the team won half of the top of 20 spots in 8th grade Calculator.
“It was a great showing,” said Anthony Gillesby, team sponsor. “The other schools present were shocked to see a team from out of town win so many events. Our Hornets did amazing.”
