Flour Bluff UIL Academics Wins Third Regional Championship in a Row

The Flour Bluff High School UIL Academic team reached a major milestone this past weekend, winning the UIL 5A Region IV Sweepstakes Championship at the University of Texas at San Antonio. This victory marks the third consecutive year the Hornets have earned the regional title.

At the Region IV meet, Flour Bluff secured the top spot in a field of over 60 schools from across South and Central Texas. The Hornets finished with 197 sweepstakes points, earning a decisive 36-point victory over second-place Leander Rouse, which had 161 points.

This regional victory follows a strong performance at the District 29-5A Meet, where the Hornets earned 600 points, finishing 342 points ahead of the second-place team, Corpus Christi Ray. Flour Bluff has now successfully defended its district title every year since 2018.

State-Qualifying Teams

Flour Bluff captured 1st Place Team honors in four major events.

  • Number Sense: Jeffery Cutshall, Olivia Zuo, Stephen Jin, and Kaylee Xu.
  • Calculator Applications: Kaylee Xu, Jeffery Cutshall, Olivia Zuo, and Stephen Jin.
  • Mathematics: Kaylee Xu, Jeffery Cutshall, Olivia Zuo, and Stephen Jin.
  • Spelling: Alice Liu, Olivia Zuo, Kaitlyn Hu, and Carina Martin

Individual Highlights & Regional Placements

The following students led the Hornets with high-ranking individual finishes:

  • Kaylee Xu: 1st in Calculator Applications & Mathematics; 5th in Number Sense.
  • Jeffery Cutshall: 1st in Number Sense; 2nd in Calculator Applications & Mathematics; 4th in Computer Science; and 5th in Science.
  • Jessa Smith: 1st in Editorial Writing (Individual State Qualifier).
  • Alice Liu: 3rd in Spelling.
  • Olivia Zuo: 2nd in Number Sense; 5th in Mathematics; 7th in Calculator Applications; and 10th in Spelling.
  • Stephen Jin: 3rd in Number Sense; 15th in Calculator Apps; 19th in Computer Science; and 20th in Mathematics.

Next Stop: State

The Hornets will compete at the UIL 5A State Academic Meet on May 18–19 at University of Texas at Austin. Flour Bluff is proud to advance eight state qualifiers who will compete across multiple categories:
