International Dyslexia Awareness Month is celebrated each year across the globe in October. This year, Flour Bluff ISD is working to raise awareness of Dyslexia through an upcoming Dyslexia Awareness Night for families. The event will be an opportunity to provide information, resources and at-home activities parents and families can use to help their child overcome the obstacles of dyslexia.
“Awareness of Dyslexia, and the impact it has on student learning, has become vital for school districts and education leaders across the state,” said Tracy Dennis, FBISD Director of Instruction.
Mrs. Dennis went on to explain that recently a Flour Bluff Intermediate student, who struggles with dyslexia, spoke at a Board meeting and requested a Dyslexia Awareness Day. In honor of the request, the District is asking all students and staff to wear red on Thursday, October 17.
“Most dyslexics go undiagnosed, some for their entire lives,” said Madison Tapia, 6th grader at Flour Bluff Intermediate. “I don’t want this to happen to any more students that is why I asked for Flour Bluff as a district to bring more awareness to dyslexia by having a day to wear red for Dyslexia Awareness day.”
In addition to wearing red to raise awareness for dyslexia on October 17th, that evening, Dyslexia Awareness Night for Parents will be held at the Primary/Elementary Library from 6 – 7:30 p.m. At the event, parents will hear from Madison and Mrs. Dennis about their struggles with dyslexia. Parents will also learn the common characteristics of dyslexia and debunk myths about the learning disability. Also, there will be learning stations set up for parents to take part in hand-on activities they can use at home to improve reading and writing skills. Attendees will also have an opportunity to interact with the dyslexia intervention program called Reading by Design used by FBISD and explore online resources available to help students.
