Bond 2025 Milestone Achieved: Baseball & Softball Facilities Complete

The first major project of Flour Bluff ISD’s Bond 2025 is officially complete, and the Hornet community celebrated in true grand slam fashion. On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, Flour Bluff ISD welcomed students, families, staff, and community members to the newly upgraded Baseball and Softball fields for the Grand Slam Celebration. The evening honored the planning, investment, and vision that made these state-of-the-art facilities possible, and it ended with two Hornet wins.

About the Project

The baseball and softball renovations were funded through the voter-approved Bond 2025 program, which originally proposed turf installation on three athletic fields. The first two fields, the softball and baseball complexes, are now complete. These projects addressed long-standing facility needs. The Flour Bluff baseball field was originally constructed in 1970 and the softball field in 1994, both built through the collective efforts of community members, students, and FBISD maintenance staff. Those fields served generations of Hornets, and Bond 2025 ensures the next generations will have facilities worthy of their dedication and talent.

The baseball and softball project represents 1.875% of the total Bond 2025 investment. Hellas Construction served as the primary contractor for the turf installation on both fields, and Ewing Construction completed the new dugouts. Additional upgrades included new scoreboards, netting, fencing, batting cages, flagpoles, and an extended softball backstop. These updates modernize the facilities, reduce long-term maintenance costs, and significantly lower water usage.

The Celebration

The evening began at 6:00 p.m. with a formal presentation followed by a look at the completed facilities, giving attendees a firsthand view of the upgrades made possible through Bond 2025
Superintendent Chris Steinbruck, Athletic Director Clynt Elwood, and Long Range Planning Committee member Todd Hunter Jr. each addressed the crowd, reflecting on what the completion of this project means for Flour Bluff student athletes, the community, and the legacy of Bond 2025.

Youth Night and First Pitches

In a moment that captured everything this night was about, the two varsity games were kicked off with ceremonial first pitches thrown by Flour Bluff youth players, a symbol of who these facilities were truly built for.

The youth experience did not stop there. Young athletes were invited to run out alongside the varsity teams during player introductions and the national anthem, giving the next generation of Hornets a chance to experience these world-class facilities up close.

The Hornets Delivered on the Field

The Grand Slam Celebration lived up to its name. Both the Flour Bluff Hornets Baseball team and the Lady Hornets Softball team delivered victories in critical district matchups that evening, capping off a truly memorable night for the entire community.

Economic Impact

Both the baseball and softball teams have already hosted tournaments this season using the renovated fields. These events brought teams and families from outside the Coastal Bend area, generating economic activity for local businesses in Flour Bluff and on Padre Island through lodging, dining, and recreational spending.

Project Milestones: What Was Built

The Bond 2025 baseball and softball upgrades are now complete and in full use. Here is a look at what was accomplished:

  • Fields in Play: Both baseball and softball teams have been practicing and competing on the new playing surfaces. Hellas Construction installed the Thermoblend Turf System on both fields, featuring advanced Ecotherm cooling technology combined with Elia Renufill, keeping surface temperatures up to 30 degrees cooler than traditional rubber infill. This supports professional-level playability, natural ball response, reduced water usage, and lower long-term maintenance costs.
  • Infrastructure Complete: New flagpoles, fencing, scoreboards, and an extended softball backstop are all finished and in use.
  • New Dugouts: Built by Ewing Construction, the new dugouts are complete and in use.
  • Batting Cage: A new state-of-the-art batting cage with six bays is available for use by both the baseball and softball teams.

A Community Effort

Just as community members, students, and FBISD maintenance staff came together to build the original fields decades ago, the communities of Flour Bluff, Padre Island, Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, and the Corpus Christi Army Depot have once again invested in the future of Flour Bluff ISD through Bond 2025.
